Hello and welcome!
Why
Alpacas?........Paul
and I purchased land, 17 acres of open cornfields, to escape
the confines of a residential development and to become gentleman,
and (woman), farmers. Initially our livestock operation included
raising Thoroughbred horses and Labrador Retriever dogs. After
building our house and a barn with fenced pastures we began
our livestock adventure. It wasn’t the return on investment
we were focused on so much as the country lifestyle surrounded
by the animals we loved and admired. Raising Labs proved to
be a lot of fun, and I had the good fortune to be able to
purchase from and breed
to top East Coast breeders to produce great hunting/show stock
and super family pets. Breeding horses was a different story.
Definitely not easy and sometimes bordering on the dangerous.
After incurring incredible vet and breeding expenses, not
to mention being bitten, stepped on, and thrown, we took a
breather and wondered if raising equines was for us. Being
a devoted, total horse lover, I dutifully toiled on until
I was seriously kicked in the back. Lying in the hospital,
barely able to breathe due to broken ribs and a bruised spine,
did it for me – thus our horse breeding operation met its
demise.
After
recovering from my injury,
the combination of having a beautifully built barn and available
open pastures coupled with the pangs of desire to become
a farmer started our search for the perfect livestock. We
looked at beef cows, pigs and even shrimp farming! But being
true animal lovers we quickly streered away from the possibilities
of raising spiny Crustaceans in our backyard. At the time both Paul and I were both full-time professionals with long hours spent at our offices, so we were looking for an animal with
a good temperament that would be relatively easy to breed,
birth and maintain. As our farm does not stretch for hundreds
of acres, the livestock of choice would have to be able to
be maintained on limited pasture space.During our search we
met a relative of ours (by marriage)
who had been raising alpacas for several years.Jeannie Flavin
of Colorado told us enough about alpacas over the phone that
we knew we were onto something wonderful. After our first
farm visit to a local breeder I knew these incredibly woolly,
sweet creatures were in our future. We continued researching
the industry and visiting several farms both in the East and
in the West, but it did not take long for us to confirm that
our livestock of choice was definitely ALPACAS.
