Facilities
Our
alpacas are safely housed within a wooden four rail and a
no-climb wire mesh fencing system. Each of our lush, green
paddocks offers its fleecy inhabitants wonderful grazing as
well as shelter from any inclimate weather conditions. Our
large custom built barn, with its spacious hay loft, provides
a cool retreat for the pregnant/nursing females and cria during
the summer, while providing a comfortable escape from the
winter weather of Upstate New York.
Adjacent
to the barn are several small paddocks and catch pens that
facilitate the handling and breeding of our alpacas. Inside
the barn the aisleway is wide enough to accomodate the width
of a pick-up truck and snowplow driving through it in the
Winter. During the Summer the concrete aisleway is used as
a shearing area. Within the barn there is a small work area
utilized for routine medical care and feed storage. We have
also built, "The Fiber Nook," a small insulated
room that is used to store alpaca fleeces, products for sale
and other supplies. The products offered include machine and
hand-spun yarn, men's and women's casual and dress apparel
such as sweaters, vests, shawls, scarves, mittens/gloves,
blankets.
Medical
Support
We
utilize the medical services of Dr. Theodore Smith-Vallone,
DVM of Ballston Spa as our veterinarian. "Dr. Teddy's"
love and respect for animals was developed at an early age
as she grew up on her family's working farm that was home
to a varied population of small and large animals including
dogs, cats, ponies, cows, chickens, horses, goats and pigs.
Knowing all throughout her childhood hat she would grow up
working with animals it was no surprise that Dr. Teddy attended
Cornell University's School of Veterinarian Medicine. In addition
to her private large and small animal practice, Mandak Veterinary
Services, Dr. Vallone and her husband, Vinnie, own and manage
Mandak Stables. Mandak Stables is a full-service equine boarding-riding
education facility. We are lucky and very thankful that Dr.
Vallone's practice and farm is located only a few minutes
from Spa Alpacas. Dr. Vallone's education and animal husbandry
experience coupled with her enthusiasm has made her an invaluable
asset to our alpaca herd's health and our breeding program.
