A Little Bit About Our Farm and Our Breeding Program...

While we began our alpaca adventure in 1997, we have over 20 years of combined experience in breeding, raising and selling show quality animals. We have applied that knowledge and experience to our business and alpaca breeding program. At SPA ALPACAS our objectives are clear; our goal is to raise alpacas with excellent conformation and superior fiber with special attention to superior genetics. Our farm is home to a herd of colorful huacaya alpacas. We have diversified bloodlines of North American bred alpacas as well as those imported from Chile, Bolivia and the Altiplanos of Peru. Each of these bloodlines and their genetic make-up brings the best of all worlds to our farm and has resulted in a select, high quality breeding program that has been recognized as being one of the best in the United States.

We began our breeding program with a mature well-known herdsire, Peruvian Eliser a.k.a. “Big Bromley.” Bromley’s attributes, which he so successfully passes onto his offspring, are excellent conformation and bone structure, incredible fiber density and crimp, and color. When we were looking to initially purchase a male for our farm we were looking for a “proven herdsire”. A proven herdsire is a male that is breeding and has produced offspring. Buying a proven male meant that we could see what Bromley already produced when bred to certain females. Buying a proven male helped us in the beginning as it took some of the guesswork out of our breeding program.

In 2000 we added two young males that we had raised ourselves, Peruvian Rensselaer and Peruvian El Senor. Rensselaer and El Senor had received numerous accolades and blue ribbons at the AOBA National Conference as well as large regional shows such as the Eastern States Alpaca Jubilee (Mapaca), the North American and the Eastern States Exposition (Big E). These males are ½ brothers; they have the same mother, and are one year apart in age. Both males boast a gorgeous fleece covering a well-conformed, beautifully balanced body. A son of Peruvian Accoyo White Lightning, Rensselaer’s genetics are as rare as he is beautiful. Rensselaer and El Senor’s dam, Peruvian Azul Celeste, has placed in National fleece competitions and Produce of Dam classes. To top it all off Rensselaer is a wonderful gentleman who has a fantastic disposition. His eagerness to please and willingness to perform was truly tested at the Big E where he placed first in the Novice Agility class over 40 other entries. Both Rensselaer’s and El Senor’s offspring have impressive fleeces and conformation. To date both males are proven, Champion producers and each have taken the blue ribbon in the coveted “get of Sire” class at competitive shows. One of our homebred male crias, “The Aga Khan,” who is a son of El Senor, has won five color championships at major shows.

While our white males are impressive we also wanted to maintain a strong color component in our herd. So in 2001 we added a bay-black male, Peruvian Black Icecapade, and Peruvian Powerplay, a fawn male, to our herdsire collection at our farm. Both have won multiple Championship honors on the East Coast. Powerplay has gone on to win the National Title of Fawn Reserve Champion at the 2002 AOBA National Conference held in Louisville, KY. Powerplay has the most impressive fawn fleece we have ever seen and the judges certainly agree with us. He received the Mill’s Choice Award at the 2002 Nationals. This award is judged by fleece processors and is awarded to a fleece that has the nicest characteristics for spinning and processing into finished goods. What better foundation to have in your breeding program! That was truly a shining moment for us and our little farm!

And finally, we have another fabulous fawn in PRA Ventura. Ventura is the proud son of Accoyo Victor. Ventura has extremely heavy bone and a large correct frame covered by super soft and very consistent light fawn fleece. Ventura’s fleece has an extremely long staple length. We have been very impressed with Ventura’s rate of fleece re-growth over the year. Ventura was shorn in July while the majority of our herd members were shorn in May. Although he was shorn late his fleece grow back rate has surpassed the rest of his herd mates! Ventura’s first cria have arrived and they are as impressive as their sire.

As with any high quality animal breeding program we are constantly developing new alpaca breeding lines from our own program, as well as introducing new bloodlines, to compliment the genetics and physical traits of our foundation male and female herd members and the offspring they produce for us and our customers. So stay in touch with our farm and check back from time to time to see our newest breeding male arrivals and announcements.

You can find more detailed information about all of our herdsires in the sales section of this website. But enough about the males, how about our females…

While a great stud is a necessity in any breeding program the other half of the equation is to have quality females for breeding. We have been very fortunate to have acquired some of the best females available in the country for our breeding, show and sales program. We have a variety of bloodlines that have been domestically bred and/or bred in Chile, Peru and Bolivia. Our Peruvian bred females lineage stems from the regions of Conchatonca, Accoyo, and Sollocota to give our breeding program a blend of genetic diversity coupled with the desired trait characteristics. The Chilean and Bolivian females add fiber fineness and deep, rich colors to our breeding program. By crossing the Peruvian, Bolivian and Chilean bloodlines we have created the best of all worlds in our domestically bred alpacas.

The resulting crias have beautifully coloredor white fiber with density, crimp and luster covering a balanced body supported by sturdy, straight legs. These adorable "cria" or baby alpacas are made complete by a gorgeous head with a beautiful expression and a full crown or topknot of fleece. Many of our breeding females and their offspring have won National and International awards for their fleece quality and conformational attributes.
